# Do You Stay in the Car at the KL to Singapore Border?

What really happens at the Malaysian and Singapore checkpoints on a private car transfer: you step out, walk to the immigration counter, and rejoin the same car on the other side.

**In short:** no, you do not stay in the car. On a MyTranslane cross-border transfer you step out at both the Malaysian and Singapore checkpoints and walk to the immigration counter with your passport. At one of the two you also carry your luggage through the customs scanner. There is no fast lane. What the private car changes is everything around the counter: one vehicle the whole way, a driver waiting for you after each checkpoint, and a door-to-door drop-off.

We get this question constantly. Many travellers assume a private car means clearing the border from your seat. It does not, and it is better to know exactly what the day looks like before you book.

## What Happens at Each Checkpoint

Every KL to Singapore trip crosses two checkpoints: the Malaysian one (the Sultan Iskandar Building on the Causeway, or the Sultan Abu Bakar Complex on the Second Link) and the Singapore one (Woodlands or Tuas). The routine is much the same at both:

1. **The driver drops you at the passenger area.** Your chauffeur knows where cross-border car passengers are let off at each complex.
2. **You walk to the immigration counter.** Everyone in the group presents their own passport and, where needed, arrival card confirmation.
3. **Luggage through the scanner, at one checkpoint.** At one of the two checkpoints you take your bags with you and put them through the customs scanner. At the other, they stay in the car.
4. **You rejoin the same car.** The driver takes the vehicle through its own check and meets you after clearance. Nobody switches vehicles.

On a quiet weekday the walk-through is quick. At peak times the queue at the counter is the slow part, and it is the same queue other travellers use.

## What You Should Prepare

- **Keep passports on you, not in a suitcase.** You will be presenting them yourself at the counter.
- **Pack so your bags are easy to carry.** At the checkpoint where luggage goes through the scanner, you handle your own bags. Wheeled cases and one bag per person make it easier.
- **Have arrival card confirmations ready.** Foreign visitors entering Malaysia submit the Malaysia Digital Arrival Card (MDAC) before arrival, and visitors to Singapore submit the SG Arrival Card. A screenshot of each confirmation on your phone saves time.
- **Ask us about digital clearance.** QR and automated clearance options change from time to time and only apply to some travellers. We tell you what applies to your group before you travel.
- **Agree a meeting point with your driver.** Your chauffeur tells you where to find the car after each counter, and you have their WhatsApp number throughout.

## Private Car vs Bus at the Border

The counter itself is the same for everyone. The difference is what happens before and after it.

| Aspect | Public bus or coach | Private car |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Immigration | Walk to the counter at both checkpoints | Walk to the counter at both checkpoints |
| Luggage | Carried at both checkpoints | Carried through one checkpoint, stays in the car at the other |
| After clearance | Wait for the whole coach, or catch the next one if it leaves | Your driver is waiting for you |
| Queue speed | Normal queue | Normal queue, no fast lane |
| Arrival in Singapore | A coach terminal, then a taxi or MRT | Your hotel or address |

> **Who this helps most**
>
> Families with young children, elderly relatives, or a lot of luggage. They still walk through immigration, but they do it once per checkpoint with a car waiting, instead of keeping pace with a busload of strangers and then finding onward transport at a terminal.

## Making the Wait Shorter

Since nobody skips the queue, timing and route matter most. Friday evenings, weekends and public holidays are the slowest windows. Your chauffeur picks Woodlands or Tuas on the day based on live conditions and your destination; the

## Common Questions

Do I have to get out of the car at the border? expand\_more

Yes. At both the Malaysian and the Singapore checkpoint every passenger steps out and walks to the immigration counter with their passport. Your driver takes the car through and you rejoin it after clearance.

Do I have to carry my luggage through immigration? expand\_more

At one of the two checkpoints, yes. You take your bags with you and put them through the customs scanner. At the other checkpoint your bags stay in the car.

Is there a fast lane for private cars? expand\_more

No. Private car passengers queue at the same immigration counters as other travellers, so a busy Friday evening or public holiday is slow for everyone. What we control is the route, the timing and the fact that your car is waiting for you afterwards.

Do we hand our passports to the driver? expand\_more

No. You keep your own passport and present it at the counter yourself. The chauffeur handles the car, the route and where to meet you after clearance.
